Marking Out Dowels
Butt the joint together and mark across the joint side and top, then using a sqaure bring the marks down onto the face to be jointed, this will ensure all drill holes are perfectly alighned. To make sure you don't drill to far down place some tape around the drill bit half a dowel measuremnet up.

Types Of Butt Joints
Butt Joint: Fix using only glue, The best glue for this would be PVA Resin, then Clamped or Cramped in place untill the glue has cured

Screwd/Nailed Butt Joint: Stronger fixing, Pilot hole drilled then screwed in from the sides, if counter sunk plugs can be cut to hide the screw heads making the over look neater. A PVA resin glue should be used but there is no need to clamp.

Doweled Butt Joint: Not as strong as the Screwed Joint but gives an invisable but effective fixing, the idea is that the dowels provide more of a gluing surface and protection when knocked at the joint., To fix this one using a drill bit to a size of the dowel to make holes in each connecting piece, then just glue and cramp.

Biscuit Butt Joint: Very effective and strong invibale fixing, basicly you route out a slot on each connecting piece and samwhich a wooden biscuit inbetween the joint, The way it works is that the biscuit is made of birch and swells when in contact with moistor from the glue, which fills the slot completely making it a very tight it also providing more glue surface. Its like a moden quick mortise and tenon.
